Before you look at that report card, read this. Parents, final report cards are coming soon. But what will those grades actually tell you about your child’s academic performance? Does that “A” or “B” mean your child is ready for next year? You’ll see a final grade, but not how that grade was calculated. Did the final grade include homework and participation, or just tests and quizzes? You won’t see your child’s most recent state test results yet, which specifically show whether your child acquired this year’s skills. Those won’t arrive until the fall when your child has already started the next school year. Grades don’t always tell the full story. A high grade doesn’t necessarily mean your child is prepared for next year, and a lower grade doesn’t always reflect the progress they’ve made. Grades paired with state test results will provide a clearer picture of true academic performance. So, what can you do this summer? Check with your school about summer learning opportunities. Many schools offer free programs that reinforce key skills and keep students engaged. There are also free online tools, like Khan Academy, and community resources that can help support your child’s progress over the break.
